My Journey with Ocrelizumab: A New Medication and Its Impact

Introducing Ocrelizumab, also known as Ocruvus – a medication that's been a game-changer for many with MS, myself included.

Here's how it works: Ocrelizumab targets and eliminates B cells, which are notorious for attacking myelin, the protective coating around nerve fibers. By reducing the number of B cells in the body, there are fewer cells wreaking havoc on myelin.

But there's a catch – B cells also play a role in keeping the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) in check. Since a staggering 95% of people are EBV positive, this adds another layer of complexity to the treatment.

To ensure safety, doctors are vigilant about vaccinating patients and keeping them up to date before starting Ocrelizumab. Additionally, taking antihistamines before each infusion helps mitigate potential adverse effects.

The treatment protocol typically involves starting with two half doses two weeks apart, followed by a full dose six months later, and then every six months thereafter.

I embarked on my Ocrelizumab journey on July 23, with the initial two half doses, followed by the first full dose on January 24, and the next scheduled for July 24. Currently, I'm halfway between my second and third doses, approximately nine months into the treatment.

Fortunately, I've experienced minimal side effects so far, aside from some itchiness during the infusions, which subsided by the end of the day. However, there was a curveball thrown my way in September 24 when I fell off a ladder, resulting in a concussion. This significantly impacted my MS symptoms and introduced new challenges, making it difficult to discern between the effects of the concussion and those of Ocrelizumab.

Despite the setback, I'm gradually recovering from the concussion and regaining my strength, mental clarity, and energy levels. This journey underscores the importance of perseverance and adaptability in navigating the ups and downs of living with MS.

Stay tuned for further updates on my Ocrelizumab journey as I continue to progress towards a brighter, healthier future.
